James Macharia

James Wainaina Macharia was born in 1959 in Kigumo, Muranga County. He is the Cabinet Secretary in the ministry of Transport and Infrastructure. He is the former Cabinet Secretary  of  Health.

 

Education Background

He attended  Kagumo High School,Nyeri for his ‘O’  and ‘A’ level. He later joined the University of Nairobi where he graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce.  He has a masters of Business Administration from Henley Management College. He is a Chartered Public Accountant (Institute of Chartered Accountants of England and Wales)

 

Career
  • January 2018: Cabinet Secretary in the ministry of Transport and Infrastructure.

  • Started May 2013 – January 2018: Cabinet Secretary for Health

  • Accountant of Deloitte & Touche,CPA (K)

  • Managing Director of African Banking Corporation,Zambia and Tanzania

  • Group Managing Director of NIC Bank

  • 1989 – 1994: Financial Controller of Standard Chartered bank

 
Profile

  • Was top in class for both “O” levels and “A” levels (Kagumo High School, Nyeri)

  • Attained B. Com (Hons) University of Nairobi – 1983

  • On merit, selected by Deloitte & Touche to train as a Chartered Accountant in London, UK.

  • Mr. Macharia is also a qualified CPA (K)

  • Attained MBA Degree from Henley Management College, UK

  • Joined Standard Chartered Bank in 1989, rising to become Financial Controller in 1994

  • Thereafter worked in Zambia as Managing Director, African Banking Corporation, and later transferred to Tanzania in the same position.

  • Has been Group Managing Director with NIC Bank from 2005 to May 2013, when the Bank grew more than tenfold and with five subsidiary companies including Tanzania & Uganda

  • He has attained significant levels of achievement in each of the above roles, resulting in his current position of Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Health.
